BRENTFORD 0 DYNAMO KYIV 0

Saturday, 13 July 2019 | In Focus

Brentford supporter Jim Walsh travelled to Austria to see the newly signed Bees join their team-mates in action in a pre-season friendly against one of Ukraine’s top teams. Despite the dreadful weather forecasts, Brentford started this pre-season friendly in beautiful sunshine in the wonderful setting of the Tyrollean mountains. The game hosted by SK Jenbach was the culmination of a week long training camp in Austria.

Brentford started brightly and in the sixth minute were awarded a penalty after a foul brought a Watkins run to an end. Unfortunately the Kiev keeper saved Marcondes penalty, diving low to his left.

It was the 11th minute before Kiev amounted an attack of any note with Raya comfortably dealing with the cross.

Brentford continued to play the better football with some neat passing – one lovely interchange between Josh DaSilva and Ollie Watkins put Ollie away with a run on goal but his shot went tamely into the side netting.  On the half hour, Sawyers played a lovely ball over the top for Marcondes but a Kiev defender managed to get back ahead of Emiliano and the danger had passed.

Soon after a flowing move down Brentford’s right saw Kiev’s first on target effort but Raya made a comfortable save at his near post.

There were one or two personal battles in a reasonably competitive encounter including Pontus and Besedin of Kiev. At one point Pontus had to leave the pitch for treatment to what looked to be a cut head that left the Bees with 10 men for several minutes before he was able to return to the action.

Half time saw Brentford make five substitutions with a further five subs coming on just after the hour. The changes saw Brentford switch from 5 at the back to a flat back four and the game became a bit disjointed.

There were good solid games from new signings Raya, Jansson and Pinnock and Norsgard looks absolute quality.

After 90 minutes, The Bees finished their week in Austria with a creditable draw against illustrious opposition. There was just enough time for the players and staff to chat and have photos with the 60 or so Bees fans who’d travelled to see their heroes and enjoy a few days in Austria.
